Antonito

You packed up your valise, and crammed it in the trunk
There was caramel on your lips, i was four-fifths drunk
You threw on your smile like a sable cape
I wondered for awhile if i'd made a mistake
A little snow starting
Sky sealed like a drum
I kick into gear hear the engine hum
When we are inscribed in the book of fate
I hope they glue a photo to the page
We hit the freeway like two bottle rockets
Our headlights were brighter than the stars
There is no one besides us in the state of colorado
There is no one in all the other cars
A little snow starting
Sky sealed like a drum
I kick into gear hear the engine hum
When we are inscribed in the book of fate
I hope they glue a photo to the page
My gut slammed with every turn of the wheel
It was you me and two tons of galvanized steel
Your shoulders were built
For the curve of my arm
And the two of us are heading
Towards every type of harm
And I am never going back
To Antonito
I’m never going back
I’m never going back

A Still, Small Voice
03:23
|
|||
I'm waiting for a sign from god
I'm waiting til I hear it
I'll stay here and I'll listen
I hope to god I don't miss it
How long, how long
I'm waiting til the stars align
I'm waiting til I see it
I'll wait here for a still, small voice
I hope that I believe it
How long, how long
I'm waiting for a voice to speak with me
No boat, no wind, no view
I'm waiting for a kind of tangible confirmation
A full face or a wink
And if I wait, I'll stay here
And if I connect the stars I'll be wrong
The dawn will wake me right along
So long, for now I think I'm gone
How long, how long
I'm waiting for a sign from god

The cool day slips on
loosing its winds.
The tossed leaves murmur
to the light on their skins.
The sun sweeps out slow
over unmown fields.
The apple trees are shedding
their rotten, brindled yields.
A girl with long hair sings
in a foreign tongue.
She lifts her white legs high
Her voice clear and young:
“Lay me out gently
like a cut rose still red.
And lay the autumn leaves
unturned about my head.”
Sweetly she goes by
murmuring her lieder.
So death recalls itself
to the sapling and the cedar.

Twisted
03:25
|
|||
I'll take a train far away and get going to someplace that I've never seen
I'll pack my bags in and out zip it up and down and I'll just drag em to the street
I'll tear the pages out straight out of the books I used to love
I'll fill a pitcher up and say it's not enough
Write on one side
But I get twisted to end in the center
And see with one eye
But I get twisted to end in the center again
I’ll ask advice, but the questions i ask only come out of half of me
I’ll look outside, only for the counter to my self to get the balance that I need
I don’t believe myself, everything I say is only half of what I see
I need to just say something, something that I really mean
Write on one side
But I get twisted to end in the center
And see with one eye
But I get twisted to end in the center again

Dig Me Up
04:26
|
|||
I've got a brand new key
I can open all the locks that you put in front of me
Yeah and I've got a brand new door
I can open all the walls that were closed off before
And I wont wait for you
To say my piece for me
And I wont wait for you
To tell me to be free
Yeah and I can see myself
Lying on my back floating down an ancient river and
I cant move myself I'm subject to the current and the tides
I can see myself floating down across three thousand rivers
All of them the same and everyone flows right into my eyes
I can see them all but they cant even feel me as I'm floating
They just carry me 'cause everything goes on and on
I got a brand new heart
It'll pump me full of blood that came from some disparate parts
Yeah and I've got some brand new eyes
They can penetrate the darkness that kept me hypnotized
And i wont wait for you
To go in front of me
And i wont wait for you
To tell me to be free
Yeah and I can see myself
Climbing up stone stairways of an old and crumbling temple and
All my sweat is leaving me to join the water in the skies
I can see myself sitting in a room on top the temple
Filled with hot and smoking incense which flows right into my eyes
I sit down and all the heat and sweat are gone for just a moment
They'll be back real soon 'cause everything goes on and on
I got some brand new clothes
i got them just in time before my old ones decomposed
Yeah and i got some brand new feet
Oh they only take me places that are always incomplete
And I wont wait for you
To set it up for me
And I wont wait for you
To tell me to be free
Yeah and I can see myself
Mumbling some words that are too old for me to realize and
They were here before i even tried to color in the lines
I can see myself walking over pavement on the cow paths
Winding roads of dirt twist endlessly around into my eyes
There's a movement in the pavement thats been stored for all these centuries
Yeah a movement there, 'cause everything goes on and on
I can see myself floating down across three thousand rivers
All of them the same and everyone flows right into my eyes
I can see them all but they cant even feel me as I'm floating
They just carry me 'cause everything goes on and on
And when you told me i was only me
I went back to the river
And when you told me I was never anyone but me
I started to shake and shiver

The Spaces I Have
05:25
|
|||
Build a fence around your heart
Protect the jewel at the inside in the dark
Go over your tattoo in black marker
Make the seemingly permanent darker
But I have nothing to grab
And still, I can use the spaces I have
Build a fence around your home
Take it with you but just speak over the phone
Keep a record of words in your memory
Fake like you're shocked by cosmological symmetry
I try but I have nothing to grab
But still, I can use the spaces I have
Build a fence around someone else
Feel the space but still retain your sense of self
Feel the freedom that comes from being alone
But even then don't lose the thing makes you whole
But I have nothing to grab
And still, I can use the spaces I have
But fences tend to break
When rains do not abate
When they arrive day by day
You find to stay in place
To help forestall a sense of change
You need an iron gate
And if you want whats real
You need a fenceless field
And if you want to grow
Make it a spacious meadow
